As to the the outcome of the case: We couldn't be more pleased – our wishes were delivered – our Roads remain. Obviously, it was a huge win for us. Though it appears from recent public comments, Lilly may have taken their loss as an opportunity (or perhaps confused signal) to continue their bullying of our community by now playing victim. Spurned and by way of some guilt-laced cathexes, Lilly now lays the blame for their ongoing corporate woes at the feet of their oldest and most loyal supporters in Hancock County? At over 46,000 employees and a capitalization beyond $63 billion, Lilly could only jokingly claim the victim's mantle now. Throughout the hearing and trial, there was no credible evidence presented that taking our roads was the solution to their security. If Lilly is now the victim, then it has been by the hands of their own incompetence that they feel so insecure. Lilly's employees at Greenfield Labs have been dwindling for years before their their desperate, snatch-the-Roads plan was sprung. Just last month, Eli Lilly made the front page of the November 14, 2005 New York Times for declining sales AND image. But perhaps they are again the victim here at their own hands; it is often Big Pharma's promotional practices that are so adept at sowing the seeds of consumer mistrust? Juxtaposed, are the huge morass of lawsuits against Eli Lilly from drugs like Zyprexa, et al. Their tactics have even drawn the attention of government investigators who recently served a subpoena to Lilly regarding business relationships with a pharmacy organization related to a number of drugs. The results? Eli Lilly has cut about 1,600 employees - about 4% of their global workforce this year. Lilly needs to right their own ship - not continue to intimidate our community. I'm honestly embarrassed for Lilly if their executives were inclined to take out a bad day at the office on the residents of Hancock County. - Rosemary Huffman |
